Access for wheelchair users

Castel Sant'Angelo is one of the best-equipped Roman museums for reduced mobility. The main route is practicable thanks to two structural features:

The helicoidal ramp (level 1): the original Roman walkway, used to transport imperial coffins, has a gentle gradient and a width of approximately 3 metres. It can be navigated with a standard wheelchair and has no steps along the main stretch. Total length approximately 100 metres.

The lift: available from the main entrance, connecting the ground floor to level 4 (Sala Paolina, loggias). Dimensions suitable for standard wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Level 5 (terrace) is reached from level 4 via several steps that currently have no mechanical alternative. Wheelchair users can access the loggia on level 4 with a partial view over the Tiber, though the summit platform with the angel is not fully accessible.

Entrance → helicoidal ramp (wheelchair → level 1) → lift (levels 2, 3, 4) → Sala Paolina → loggias → return by lift.

Accessible levels include:

  • Level 1: entrance, helicoidal ramp, burial chamber
  • Level 2: Courtyard of the Angel (armoury, original marble angel)
  • Level 3: columned halls (papal stores), Treasury Room
  • Level 4: Sala Paolina, Room of Apollo, papal apartments, loggias with Tiber view

The Cortile delle Palle has an irregular stone surface — accessible with assistance.

Tickets and concessions

Free admission for:

  • Visitors with certified disability (supporting documentation required)
  • One companion for each visitor with a disability (also free)

The concession is not automatic: present identification and disability certification at the ticket desk. The "Disabled" category with the same terms is available on coopculture.it for online booking.

Sensory accessibility

Visitors with visual impairments

  • Audio guides available in Italian, English, French, German, Spanish (~€5)
  • Some museum sections have Braille panels and tactile maps (verify current availability at the ticket desk)
  • The route can be navigated with a guide dog (documentation required)

Visitors with hearing impairments

  • Audio guide not available in a format for hearing-impaired visitors
  • Multilingual educational panels with comprehensive text throughout the route
  • Guided visits with Italian Sign Language (LIS) interpreter can be booked via coopculture.it

Cognitive accessibility

There is currently no dedicated guide for visitors with cognitive disabilities or autism spectrum disorders. The museum does not offer structured sensory visit programmes. Practical advice:

  • Visit during quieter hours (opening 9:00–10:00 or after 16:00)
  • Avoid weekends in high season (April–October)
  • The route can be interrupted at any level thanks to the lift — completing all levels is not obligatory
  • The sound environment tends to be loud at level 2 (courtyard) during peak hours

Accessible parking

There is no dedicated disabled parking space at the museum on Lungotevere Castello. The nearest reserved spaces are on the Lungotevere itself (check signage). An NCC vehicle or taxi can drop off the visitor directly at the entrance — the Lungotevere is not a ZTL zone and drop-off is straightforward.
