Rome is carved with miles of catacombs: which one to choose?
Beneath Rome run hundreds of miles of catacombs, the ancient underground Christian (and partly Jewish) cemeteries. For visitors the question isn't "whether" to see them, but which one: they open in rotation, each has its own character, and nearly all can only be visited with a guide. This guide helps you pick the right one for you.
The four main catacombs compared
| Catacombs | Where | Highlight | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Callisto | Via Appia | The largest · Cripta dei Papi | The "classic" choice, very complete |
| San Sebastiano | Via Appia | Origin of the word "catacomb" · basilica above | Smaller, tied to the saint |
| Domitilla | Appia/Ardeatina area | The most extensive · underground basilica | Frescoes and atmospheric chambers |
| Priscilla | Via Salaria (north) | Ancient frescoes · "Queen of the catacombs" | The oldest depiction of the Virgin Mary |
Which one to choose
- If you visit only one and want the "best": San Callisto — the largest, home to the Cripta dei Papi. → Catacombs of San Callisto
- If you're interested in early Christian frescoes: Priscilla (on the Salaria, to the north) or Domitilla.
- If you also want a basilica above ground: San Sebastiano or Domitilla (with its underground basilica).
- If you're already on the Appia: San Callisto, San Sebastiano and Domitilla are all nearby, easy to pair up by car.
What to know before you go
- Guided tour: nearly all are visited with a guide only (30-45 min), in several languages.
- Open in rotation: each complex closes on a different day of the week (plus winter periods): always check before you go, so you don't find them shut.
- Temperature: it's cool underground (~15°C): bring a sweatshirt.
- Respect: these are sacred burial sites.

Can you visit two catacombs on the same day?
Yes, but carefully: the ones on the Appia (San Callisto, San Sebastiano, Domitilla) are close to one another, yet they have different closing days and guided-tour times. With a private car you can fit two visits into half a day; by public transport it's trickier given the frequencies and distances.
Frequently asked questions
Which are the most important catacombs in Rome? San Callisto (the largest, with the Cripta dei Papi), San Sebastiano (which gave us the word "catacomb"), Domitilla (the most extensive, with an underground basilica) and Priscilla (on the Salaria, with extremely ancient frescoes).
Which catacombs should I visit in Rome if I pick just one? San Callisto is the most complete and representative choice, with the Cripta dei Papi. If you prefer early Christian frescoes, consider Priscilla or Domitilla.
Can you visit Rome's catacombs on your own? No: nearly all require a guided tour (30-45 minutes), by reservation or on arrival, in several languages.
Why do the catacombs close in rotation? For logistics and preservation, each complex has a different weekly closing day (and sometimes a winter period). Always check before you go so you don't find them closed.
Can you see two catacombs on the same day? Yes, especially the ones on the Appia (close to one another), but you need to coordinate opening days and tour times. A private car makes the pairing far easier.
