Where It Is

Rione Monti (the Monti district) sits in the heart of Rome, between the Colosseum, the Imperial Forums, Via Nazionale, and Via Cavour. It's a dead-central location, partly set on higher ground and laced with cobbled alleys that beg to be explored on foot. It borders some of the city's greatest monuments.

By Metro

The easiest option is Metro Line B:

  • Cavour — drops you straight into the heart of Monti, near Via Urbana and Via Leonina.
  • Colosseo — handy for the side of the district closest to the Forums and to San Pietro in Vincoli.

Line B connects directly to Termini, EUR, and San Paolo.

On Foot

Monti is a natural stop on any walk through the center: just steps from the Colosseum, the Imperial Forums, Termini, and Via Nazionale. The best way to experience it is exactly that, on foot, losing yourself in the alleys.

By Bus

The area is served by several bus lines along Via Cavour and Via Nazionale, convenient from Termini and the surrounding areas.

By Car and Private Driver (NCC)

The district sits inside a ZTL with narrow alleys that aren't built for cars: driving in with your own vehicle is not recommended. A private driver (NCC, chauffeur service) makes the visit far easier: they drop you at the edge of the district (on Via Cavour, say, or near the Forums) and pick you up wherever you need, perfect for pairing Monti with the Colosseum, with San Pietro in Vincoli, or for the ride home after an evening aperitivo (pre-dinner drinks).

Suggested Itinerary

Monti pairs perfectly with:

  • The Colosseum and the Imperial Forums.
  • San Pietro in Vincoli (home to the Moses of Michelangelo).
  • The Domus Aurea on the Oppian Hill.
  • An evening among the district's wine bars and trattorie (casual local eateries).
