An experience of art and architecture

The Scuderie del Quirinale (the former papal stables, now an exhibition venue) deliver a double experience: the headline temporary exhibitions on one hand, and the building itself on the other, with its spectacular outlook over Rome. Here's what to expect and what not to miss on your visit.

The major exhibitions

The heart of any visit is the blockbuster shows, staged across the two main floors. The Scuderie host single-artist and thematic exhibitions of the highest caliber, often built on international loans: from the masters of the Renaissance and the Baroque to modern and contemporary art. Each exhibition is an event in its own right, so it's worth checking what's currently on and giving it the time it deserves.

The glass staircase and the view

One of the most beloved features of the Scuderie is the panoramic glass staircase, added during the late-twentieth-century restoration: as you climb or descend, you're treated to a spectacular view over the rooftops of Rome, with domes and bell towers opening up before your eyes. It's a highlight of the experience you won't want to miss, and a chance for a memorable photo.

The spaces of the old stables

The building itself is worth your attention, too: the generous gallery spaces preserve the memory of the eighteenth-century papal stables, expertly restored. The meeting of historic architecture and contemporary installations sets up a fascinating dialogue between past and present.

The outlook over Piazza del Quirinale

On your way out, it's worth lingering on Piazza del Quirinale, with the Fountain of the Dioscuri (Castor and Pollux), the obelisk and the view over the city. The Scuderie make the ideal jumping-off point for exploring the hill and heading down toward the Trevi Fountain.

How to plan your visit

  1. Give yourself time for the current exhibition (check the theme and run dates)
  2. Climb the glass staircase and enjoy the panorama
  3. Take in the restored spaces of the old stables
  4. Step out onto Piazza del Quirinale and the Dioscuri
  5. Continue toward the Trevi Fountain and the city center
