Why Booking Is Mandatory

The Galleria Borghese admits a maximum of 360 visitors per time slot, divided into two-hour sessions. This is not a commercial choice: it is a constraint imposed by the Soprintendenza to preserve the works, since the casino is structurally small and its fragile masterpieces require controlled conditions.

The system has been in place since 1997, when the gallery reopened after a lengthy restoration. Walk-in access is never permitted, not even in low season.

Where to Book

The official channel is the Soprintendenza Capitolina website. Tickets are also available through third-party operators (possibly with a surcharge). It is advisable to book at least one week in advance during peak months (March–October); Saturday morning and Sunday slots sell out weeks ahead.

How Entry Works

  1. Arrive at the ticket desk at least 10 minutes before your slot time.
  2. Deposit bags, backpacks and coats at the cloakroom (mandatory, free of charge).
  3. Collect an audio guide at the entrance if desired (~€5).
  4. Follow the route: the ground floor is dedicated to sculptures, the upper floor to the picture gallery.
  5. At the end of the two hours you are required to leave: staying for the next slot is not permitted.

Latecomers who arrive after the slot has started may be refused entry. No exceptions.

Practical Tips

  • Avoid Friday and Saturday mornings: the busiest slots and the hardest to book.
  • The 13:00 slot is often the least crowded on weekdays.
  • Check availability well in advance: in high season tickets sell out within days of going on sale.
  • Bring a photo ID: required for reductions and spot-checks at the entrance.
  • Photography without flash is permitted; tripods are not allowed.
