Tivoli's water spectacle

The Great Waterfall of the Aniene is the heart and the symbol of Villa Gregoriana in Tivoli: a towering plunge of water, roughly 120 m high, that crashes into the gorge with a thunderous roar and astonishing power. It is the largest waterfall in Tivoli and one of the most spectacular in Lazio. Seeing it up close, wrapped in spray and the rush of the water, is the kind of experience that stays with you: nature and engineering in a single, magnificent show.

An "artificial" waterfall born from a flood

Natural as it looks, the Great Waterfall is actually a feat of human ingenuity. After a devastating flood of the Aniene in 1826 threatened the center of Tivoli, Pope Gregory XVI had the river diverted through a tunnel cut into the mountain. In 1835 the water was channeled along its new course, creating this dramatic cascade and securing the town. The park of Villa Gregoriana was born from the same project.

Where to admire it

Along the route through Villa Gregoriana there are several viewpoints and panoramic spots that frame the waterfall from different angles:

  • The viewpoints from above, which take in the entire plunge of water.
  • The points along the gorge, closer to the roar of the water.
  • The glimpses from the trails that descend toward the grottoes.

Every spot offers a different perspective on this natural spectacle.

A Grand Tour icon

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Great Waterfall and the Tivoli gorge were a much-loved stop on the Grand Tour: European painters, poets and travelers came here to capture a "sublime" landscape of water, rock and ancient temples. The views of Tivoli inspired countless works of art and helped shape the romantic myth of the waterfall.

Tips for your visit

  • Comfortable shoes: the viewpoints are reached along trails with steep changes in elevation.
  • Mind the spray: near the waterfall the air is damp and full of mist.
  • Bring your camera: the views of the waterfall and the temples are spectacular.
  • Check opening times: Villa Gregoriana opens seasonally (managed by FAI, Italy's National Trust).
