Where to Buy: The Only Official Site

The official ticket site is museivaticani.va. Only this site guarantees:

  • Authentic tickets at official prices
  • Option to modify up to 48 hours before
  • Direct access to booking for groups and official guided tours

Beware of Reseller Sites

Online there are dozens of sites reselling tickets at inflated prices (€35–70) — often presenting themselves as semi-official. They are easy to spot: they have URLs different from museivaticani.va and show prices well above €21.

The rule is simple: if the price exceeds €21 for a standard adult ticket, it is not the official site.

How to Book Step by Step

  1. Go to museivaticani.va
  2. Click "Tickets and services" → "Entry tickets"
  3. Select date and number of visitors
  4. Choose time slot (early morning slots fill up first)
  5. Complete payment by credit or debit card
  6. Receive confirmation email with QR code

The QR code is scanned at the dedicated pre-booked entrance — bypassing the ticket queue entirely.

Special Options

Official Guided Tour (€35–45)

Includes: guide in Italian, English, Spanish, French, German or Portuguese. Maximum group size: 25 people. The guide carries a small coloured paddle that helps the group stay together through the route.

Worth it? Yes, for those who want to contextualise what they are seeing without prior study. The guide knows the unwritten rules (where to pause, where photography is permitted, how to manage flows in the Sistine Chapel).

Early Access (€50–80)

Some tours offer entry at 8:00 or 7:00, one hour before regular opening, with a reduced number of visitors. The Raphael Rooms and Sistine Chapel seen nearly empty are a completely different experience from the standard visit.

Worth it? Yes, especially in high season. The additional cost over a standard tour is justified by the difference in atmosphere.

Private Tour (from €150–200 per group)

Dedicated guide, flexible schedule, customisable route, early access available. Ideal for couples, families with young children, or those with specific requirements.

Evening Tour (April–October, Fridays)

Selected evening openings allow visiting the museums at sunset. Tickets available at museivaticani.va, price approximately €35–45. Limited availability, sells out fast.

The Free Last Sunday: How to Make the Most of It

On the last Sunday of every month the Vatican Museums open free of charge from 9:00 to 14:00 (last entry 12:00). Key points:

  • Queues begin before 7:30. Those who arrive at 9:00 already face 1–2 hours of waiting
  • Booking is not mandatory but strongly recommended when available (some Sundays the free booking opens online a few days in advance)
  • Crowds are considerably higher than normal. If visit quality matters more than saving money, a regular weekday is a better choice

How Far in Advance to Book?

  • High season (March–October): at least 2–4 weeks ahead, especially for early morning slots
  • Easter and Christmas: 6–8 weeks or more in advance
  • Low season (November–February): 3–7 days' notice is usually enough
  • Free last Sunday: booking (when available) opens approximately 5–7 days before and sells out quickly

Cancellation and Modification

The standard online ticket is non-refundable. It can be modified (change of date/time) up to 48 hours before the selected entry time. After 48 hours the ticket cannot be changed or refunded.

Guided and private tours have slightly different policies — read the conditions at the time of purchase.

Tickets for Families and Groups

Families

There is no specific "family ticket". Savings come from buying reduced tickets for children (€8 for ages 6–18, free for under 6). For larger families, a private tour can be economically competitive when compared with multiple individual tickets plus audio guides.

School Groups

School groups access discounted rates by booking through the dedicated channels on the website. Prior communication with the Vatican Museums group office is required.

Adult Groups (10+ people)

Adult groups can book group tickets with a guide through the dedicated section of the website. Booking is mandatory; no automatic discount is guaranteed.

Arriving by Private Driver: No Parking Stress

The problem of the Vatican Museums is not only the ticket queue — it is arriving on time, especially for early access. The area around Viale Vaticano is congested from 8:30 onwards. An NCC driver drops you directly at the entrance at the agreed time.

Arrive on time for your ticket slot: private driver with direct drop-off at Viale Vaticano. Service from €49. → Book your driver at myromedriver.com

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy a ticket on site without booking? Yes, but only if places are available and you are willing to queue. In high season the walk-up queue can last 2–3 hours. The risk of finding no available places for the day is real.

Is online booking always mandatory? No, it is strongly recommended. Walk-up entry is always possible (if places are available). But the €4 booking fee is the best investment of the visit: it saves hours of queuing.

Does the Vatican Museums ticket also include St Peter's Basilica? No. The Basilica has separate free access from St Peter's Square. The Museums ticket covers only the museums and the Sistine Chapel.

What happens if I do not arrive at my booked time slot? The ticket is valid for the entire day (not just the selected time slot), so you can enter at a different time from the one booked, within the museum's closing time.

Does the Roma Pass give access to the Vatican Museums? The Roma Pass provides reduced-price access to certain Roman museums, but not the Vatican Museums, which are located in Vatican City (an independent state). Always check the current conditions on the official Roma Pass card.
