The highest square in Rome
In front of the Quirinal Palace opens the dramatic Piazza del Quirinale, atop the highest hill in Rome. From here you take in one of the finest views over the city, with the dome of St Peter's rising above the rooftops. At the center of the square stands the majestic Dioscuri fountain, with its towering obelisk and colossal statues: a monumental ensemble that makes a fitting gateway to the presidential residence.
The Dioscuri and the obelisk
The monument at the center of the square brings together pieces from different eras:
- The two colossal statues of Castor and Pollux (the Dioscuri) with their horses, Roman-era copies of Greek originals.
- The Egyptian obelisk, brought here from the Mausoleum of Augustus (Mausoleo di Augusto).
- The fountain's basin, an ancient granite basin taken from the Roman Forum (Foro Romano).
They were assembled here between the 16th and 19th centuries, creating one of the most successful monumental "collages" in Rome.

The changing of the guard
One of the most beloved sights is the changing of the honor guard in front of the palace, with the Corazzieri (the Cuirassiers, the prestigious mounted and dismounted honor guard) and the Fanfara (the mounted band). On days featuring the ceremonial changing of the guard (typically certain Sundays and special occasions), the rite unfolds with a large crowd and musical accompaniment: a free, atmospheric event that draws plenty of photographers. Dates and times are approximate and subject to change: check the official website.
The panorama
From Piazza del Quirinale, leaning over the balustrade, you take in a spectacular view across the rooftops of Rome, the domes and St Peter's in the distance. It's one of the finest and least obvious lookout points in the center, especially magical at sunset.
Tips for your visit
- Check the ceremonial changing of the guard: to catch the rite with the Fanfara, look up the dates.
- Go at sunset: the light on the square and the panorama is magnificent.
- Pair it with the Trevi Fountain: it's just a few minutes downhill.
- The square is always open: free and accessible at any time.
