One of Rome's most beloved martyrs

St Lawrence is one of Rome's most popular and venerated saints. A deacon of the Church in the 3rd century, he was martyred in 258 AD during the persecution under the emperor Valerian. Tradition ties him to one famous episode — the gridiron — and to a line that became proverbial. Above his tomb, along the Via Tiburtina, rose the great Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura, which guards his memory.

The "treasure of the Church"

According to tradition, Lawrence, entrusted with the goods of the Christian community, was ordered to hand over the treasures of the Church to the authorities. Lawrence instead gathered the poor, the sick, and the outcast, presented them, and said: "Here are the treasures of the Church." It was a gesture of extraordinary symbolic force — one that cost him his life but made him immortal in Christian memory.

The gridiron and the famous line

The best-known episode is his martyrdom on the gridiron (an iron grate over which he was said to have been burned alive). Tradition holds that, in the midst of the torture, Lawrence spoke with astonishing composure: "Turn me over, this side is already done." ("Assum est, versa et manduca" — "It is roasted, turn it over and eat."). True or legendary, this story made Lawrence the symbol of courage in the face of persecution, and the gridiron his iconographic attribute.

The patron saint and the Night of San Lorenzo

St Lawrence is the patron of cooks, firefighters, and librarians, among others — precisely for his link with fire and with the "treasures" placed in his care. His feast day, 10 August, coincides with the famous "Night of San Lorenzo", the night of the shooting stars: in popular tradition, those bright trails are read as the martyr's "tears" or sparks.

The cult at San Lorenzo fuori le Mura

The basilica on the Via Tiburtina is the saint's main place of worship in Rome: it preserves his tomb and the relics of his martyrdom. For the full visit, see the guide to San Lorenzo fuori le Mura.
