Two distinct attractions
St Peter's and the Vatican Museums are separate entities: both lie within Vatican City, but they have independent entrances, tickets and management. St Peter's Basilica is free. The Vatican Museums cost approximately €17–21 depending on the booking channel, and the Sistine Chapel is included in the ticket.
There is no internal route connecting the two directly: visitors to the Museums must exit and make their way to St Peter's Square separately.
Where the Vatican Museums are located
The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano, about 15 minutes on foot from St Peter's Square, going around the Vatican Walls. It is not visible from the square. For those unfamiliar with the area, it is easy to get confused: the entrance opens onto an anonymous street with a long queue outside.

Opening hours
The Vatican Museums are open Monday–Saturday, from 9:00 to 18:00 (last entry 16:00). They are closed to the public on Sundays, except the last Sunday of each month, when admission is free — but queues are extreme.
St Peter's Basilica is open every day from 7:00 to 18:00 (winter) or 19:00 (summer).
How to plan your day
Morning at the Museums, afternoon at St Peter's is the most efficient combination:
- Arrive at the Vatican Museums at opening time (9:00) with a pre-booked ticket
- Visit the Museums and Sistine Chapel: 2–3 hours
- Exit and walk to St Peter's Square (~15 min on foot)
- Lunch in Prati or Borgo
- St Peter's Basilica in the afternoon (less crowded after 14:00)
Avoid the reverse order: visitors who start at the basilica first thing in the morning often lack the energy for the Museums in the afternoon.
The Sistine Chapel: what to know
The Sistine Chapel is inside the Vatican Museums and is reached through the museum galleries — it cannot be visited separately. Time spent in the chapel is brief: you enter, observe Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling (1508–1512) and the Last Judgement on the altar wall (1534–1541), then exit. Silence is required. Photography is not prohibited, but flash is not permitted.
What's included in the museum route
The Vatican Museums include numerous collections: the Gallery of Maps, the Raphael Rooms, the Pio-Clementine Museum with the Laocoön statue, and the Vatican Picture Gallery. A full visit requires at least 3–4 hours. For those with limited time, the abbreviated route directly to the Sistine Chapel takes approximately 1.5 hours.
Access and transport
The Vatican is not within Rome's ZTL restricted traffic zone: access by car is unrestricted. The area is well served by:
- Metro A — Ottaviano stop (5 minutes' walk from the Museums)
- Bus — lines 23, 40, 62, 492 with stops on Via della Conciliazione
- On foot — approximately 25–30 minutes from the historic centre
With a private driver

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I enter the Sistine Chapel without a Vatican Museums ticket? No. The Sistine Chapel is inside the Vatican Museums and has no separate ticket. The only way to visit it is to purchase a museum ticket.
Can you go directly from the Vatican Museums to St Peter's without going outside? Technically yes, through the Bronze Door of the Sistine Chapel, but this route is reserved for guided groups with specific authorisation. Individual visitors must exit and walk to the square.
How much does it cost to visit both in one day? St Peter's Basilica is free. The Vatican Museums cost approximately €17. If you add the St Peter's Dome (€6–8), the total budget is around €23–25 per person.
