The neighbourhood: Prati and Borgo

The castle sits on the border between two complementary neighbourhoods:

  • Prati: a residential area frequented by Romans, with authentic trattorias and wine bars well away from tourist pricing. The main street is Via Cola di Rienzo.
  • Borgo: the pilgrims' quarter between the castle and the Vatican. More touristy, but with hidden gems in Borgo Pio and Borgo Vittorio.

Dinner with a view

Restaurants with Lungotevere terrace seating

Several restaurants along the Lungotevere Castello and Lungotevere Tor di Nona offer tables with a direct view of the illuminated castle in the evening. Always book 2–3 days ahead for terrace tables; specify when you call: "a table with a view of the castle".

Gelato and pastries

Gelateria dei Gracchi (Via dei Gracchi, Prati)

Artisanal gelato with selected ingredients, considered among the best in Rome. Distance: 10 minutes on foot. Open in the evening until 23:00.

Forno Roscioli di Prati (Via Cola di Rienzo)

Roman bakery and pastry shop: cornetti, maritozzi, torta della nonna. Ideal for breakfast or an afternoon snack.

Practical tips

  • Roman timing: restaurants open for dinner no earlier than 19:30; some trattorias open at 20:00. Arriving before opening = waiting list
  • Evening bookings: Prati is popular with locals — the best places book out 2–3 days in advance
  • Cover charge: it is normal in trattorias to be charged a coperto (€1–3 per person)
  • Avoid tourist traps: restaurants directly on the Lungotevere with laminated menus in six languages tend to offer lower quality than the trattorias in the side streets of Prati

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a restaurant inside the castle? Only a café/bar on the fourth level (terrace). For a full meal you need to head to the surrounding streets.

Where to eat typical Roman food without overspending? Borgo Pio and the side streets of Prati (Via dei Gracchi, Via Bettolo) offer the best value for authentic cooking.

Do they accept credit cards? Most do, but smaller trattorias prefer cash. Better to have some euros to hand.
