The audio guide

The official audio guide is available at the museum entrance in several languages (Italian, English, French, Spanish, German). It costs approximately €5 extra on top of the entry ticket and covers:

  • The helicoidal ramp and the building's construction history
  • The Courtyard of the Balls and the original angel
  • The papal rooms (Sala Paolina, Treasury Room)
  • The terrace and the story of Verschaffelt's angel

Pros: go at your own pace, no booking needed. Cons: does not go into advanced historical detail; not available for the Passetto.

Group tours with a local guide

Several agencies offer guided group tours of the castle, often combined with a visit to the Vatican and St Peter's Square in the same half-day. Typical duration: 3–4 hours total.

Things to check before booking:

  • Does the tour include museum entry or just guide accompaniment?
  • Is the guide certified (regional licence)?
  • Is the group limited in size (max 20–25 people for a quality visit)?
  • Does it include the terrace?

Group tours are affordable (€25–45 per person all-inclusive) but limit the time spent in each room.

Private tours

A private tour with a licensed guide is the best choice for:

  • Families with children: the guide tailors the story to the children's age
  • Small groups (2–8 people): personalised pace, stops wherever you want
  • History enthusiasts: in-depth coverage of specific themes (prisons, papal art, military history)

Duration: 2 hours for the castle; 3 hours for castle + Ponte Sant'Angelo + Passetto (when available).

Average cost: €150–250 for the group (not per person), entry excluded. Guides specialising in Roman history typically offer the most comprehensive service.

Special visit to the Passetto di Borgo

The Passetto (the elevated corridor connecting the castle to the Vatican) is only open to the public on special occasions. Openings are managed by CoopCulture and must be booked exclusively at coopculture.it.

  • Period: spring and autumn, selected weekends
  • Duration: approximately 1 hour (guided visit mandatory, not self-guided)
  • Cost: ~€15–20 per person
  • Maximum: 20 people per session

The Passetto is not accessible independently: the guided tour is the only legal way to enter.

Themed tours

Some operators offer specific themed tours:

  • Prisons tour: focus on Giordano Bruno, Beatrice Cenci, Benvenuto Cellini
  • Evening tour: during special evening openings (Estate Romana)
  • Photography tour: guide + technical tips for the best angles (see article no. 113)
  • Archaeology tour: from Hadrian's tomb to medieval transformations
