Half-day itinerary (3–4 hours)

9:00 — Arrival and Ponte Sant'Angelo

Start from the Prati side of Ponte Sant'Angelo early in the morning when the light falls sideways across Bernini's sculptures. Walk the bridge observing the ten angels (20 minutes). Photograph from the north side to have the light on the castle.

9:30 — Entering the castle

Buy your ticket at the entrance (or have your online booking ready). Suggested interior route:

  1. Helicoidal ramp (15 min)
  2. Courtyard of the Balls with the original angel (10 min)
  3. Sala Paolina (15 min)
  4. Terrace — panoramic view (20–30 min)

11:30 — Lungotevere and view of the Passetto

Exit and walk along the Lungotevere Castello northward to see the structure from outside. From Via della Conciliazione you can see the Passetto di Borgo running high along the buildings. Walk back towards the Prati area.

12:30 — Lunch in Prati

Lunch at one of the Prati trattorias (see article no. 115). End of half-day itinerary.

14:00 — St Peter's Basilica (optional)

The castle is just 500 m from the entrance to St Peter's Basilica. Free visit to the basilica (1–1.5 hours). Buy tickets for the Dome in advance if you want to climb up.

16:00 — Piazza Navona

From St Peter's Square, 20 minutes on foot via Via dei Banchi Nuovi and Corso Vittorio Emanuele II leads to Piazza Navona, with Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers and the Moor Fountain.

17:30 — Return to the castle for sunset

Return to the Lungotevere about 1 hour before sunset to photograph the castle in the golden light and enjoy the twilight with an aperitivo at the local bars.
