Tickets and Booking

Where do I buy tickets?

The official channel is coopculture.it — the cooperative that manages ticketing for the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Culture. Avoid third-party websites: they often resell the same ticket at markups of up to 30%.

On the official site you can purchase:

  • Standard ticket (Colosseum + Roman Forum + Palatine Hill)
  • Ticket with arena floor access (Vela Aurea entry)
  • Special visit tickets: hypogeum, upper levels, evening experiences

How much does a ticket cost?

Standard ticket: €18 adults, €2 reduced (18–25 EU citizens), free for under-18s and other eligible groups. Includes Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, valid for 2 consecutive days.

With arena: €24. Includes access to the arena floor (Vela Aurea), available in timed entry slots with limited capacity.

Hypogeum + arena: €22–24 depending on the package. Available only with an authorised guide.

Note: since 2023, the base ticket does not automatically include the arena — you must select the correct fare when booking.

How far in advance should I book?

In high season (April–October) book at least 3–5 days ahead, ideally 1–2 weeks. For special routes (hypogeum, upper levels, evening visits) the ideal window is 2–4 weeks, as capacity is much more limited.

In low season (November–March) same-day or next-day availability is often possible — but not guaranteed during public holidays.

Is there a difference between online and on-site tickets?

Yes. Online tickets carry a €2 booking fee per person, but guarantee entry without queuing at the ticket offices. On-site tickets have no surcharge, but in high season waiting times range from 45 minutes to over 3 hours.

The convenience of the surcharge is almost always clear: €2 to skip hours of queuing is invariably worthwhile.

Opening Hours and Entry

What are the opening hours?

The Colosseum opens every day except 1 January and 25 December. Hours vary seasonally:

  • January–February: 09:00–16:30
  • March (until end of winter hours): 09:00–17:30
  • April–September: 09:00–19:15
  • October: 09:00–18:30
  • November–December: 09:00–16:30

Last entry is 1 hour before closing. Exact hours change year to year: always verify on coopculture.it before your visit.

What time is best to arrive?

The ideal window is 08:45–09:15: you arrive a few minutes before opening, with thin crowds and low morning light on the arena. Avoid arriving after 10:30 in high season, when organised tour groups already begin to accumulate.

How long does a visit take?

For a standard visit:

  • Colosseum only: 1.5–2 hours
  • Colosseum + Roman Forum + Palatine Hill: 4–5 hours total
  • Route with hypogeum or upper levels: 2.5–3 hours for the Colosseum alone

Do not try to see everything in one day: your ticket is valid for 2 days — use both.

Routes and Levels

What do I see with a standard ticket?

With a standard ticket (without arena) you access:

  • First-level annular corridors — the arched galleries with views to the exterior
  • Second level — the panoramic terrace overlooking the arena from the perimeter
  • Permanent exhibition on the intermediate floor: history of the munera, video section, artefacts

Not included: arena, third and fourth levels, hypogeum.

How does the arena visit (Vela Aurea) work?

Since 2023, the arena floor is accessible with timed-entry tickets. Once inside, you can stand at the centre of the reversible wooden deck and view the hypogeum below through glazed panels. Capacity is limited for conservation reasons, so book ahead.

Is the hypogeum worth it?

Yes, if you have historical or architectural interest. The hypogeum — the underground system of corridors, rooms and cages for gladiators and animals — is the operational heart of the amphitheatre. The visit requires an authorised guide included in the special ticket price. The environment is cool, dimly lit, and unsuitable for visitors with claustrophobia.

What to Bring and Wear

What should I pack?

Essential list:

  • Water: at least 1 litre per person. There are no refill points inside
  • Shoes with thick soles: the Roman cobblestones are uneven and uncomfortable
  • Light snack: there are no cafés inside the Colosseum
  • Earphones for audio guide if using one
  • Sunglasses and hat in summer

Can I bring large bags or trolley cases?

No. Large bags (over 30×15×20 cm) and trolley cases are not permitted inside. A paid left-luggage service is available near the entrance, but with limited capacity. If you arrive with luggage, leave it at your hotel before your visit.

Photography

Can I take photos inside?

Yes, for personal non-commercial use with no particular restrictions. Smartphones, compact cameras and mirrorless cameras are all permitted. Lightweight tripods (not wide-base ones) are generally tolerated inside.

Drone use is not permitted at or near the site.

What is the best time for photos?

At opening (08:45–09:30): low daylight, long shadows on the arena, almost no crowd. Blue hour (15–20 minutes before sunset) is only possible if your visit runs until closing. Summer evening openings (July–August, Friday–Saturday) offer exceptional light conditions.

Getting There

How do I reach the Colosseum by public transport?

  • Metro Line B, stop Colosseo: lifts available (accessible), but the exit opens onto cobblestones — 200 m on foot to the entrance
  • Bus: lines 75, 81, 85, 87, 118 — stop Colosseo/Via Sacra
  • Tram 3: stop Colosseo

There is no public car park nearby. If driving, the nearest car park is at Circo Massimo (paid, approximately 10 minutes' walk).

Is a private transfer worth it?

An NCC driver takes you to the exact Colosseum entrance (Via Sacra, east side) with no parking stress, no luggage to drag, no public transport. For families, elderly visitors, people with reduced mobility, or those arriving directly from the airport, it is the most efficient option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Colosseum ticket include the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill? Yes. The standard ticket includes all three sites and is valid for 2 consecutive days. The combined entry was introduced to encourage a full visit of the ancient historic centre.

Can I bring young children to the Colosseum? Yes. Children under 18 enter free. Pushchairs can access the first level via ramps, but not the upper levels. The arena has been accessible by pushchair since 2023. Note that the internal galleries can be frightening for very young children due to darkness and low ceilings.

Do I need a guided tour? Not for the standard ticket — you can visit independently with the included map or audio guide (€6 extra). A guide is mandatory for special routes (hypogeum, upper levels) and is included in the price of the special ticket.

What if it rains? The structure is largely open to the elements: the arena and upper levels are exposed. The first and second-level annular corridors are covered. In light rain a visit is still pleasant; in heavy rain surfaces become slippery. Bring a light waterproof layer.

Can I use the Roma Pass for the Colosseum? Yes. The Roma Pass (48 or 72 hours) includes 1 or 2 free museums/sites — the Colosseum is among the eligible sites. The ticket must still be booked in advance on coopculture.it specifying the Roma Pass. Entry is not immediate without a booking.
