The three sites form a continuous complex, walkable in sequence: Colosseum to Forum, Forum to Palatine. With a well-organised day you can visit all three comfortably, spending 1.5–2 hours at each, for around 5–7 hours of active visiting.
The Combined Ticket: 2025 Prices and Validity
Standard ticket: €12 adults; valid 2 consecutive days for all three sites.
Full Experience (+ Colosseum arena + hypogeum): €22 adults; valid 2 days.
Reductions: free under 6; reduced for EU under-18s and over-65s; check updated rates at coopculture.it.

Strategy: if you have two days in Rome, do the Colosseum on day one (morning) and the Forum + Palatine on day two (morning). If you have only one day, follow the itinerary below.
One-Day Itinerary: Hour-by-Hour
08:00 — Arrive at the Colosseum
First thing in the morning is the best choice to avoid queues. Crowds build from 09:30–10:00 onwards. With online booking, use the skip-the-line lane.
At the Colosseum: allow 90 minutes–2 hours. Priorities:
- Arena floor (views over the Roman Forum)
- Second level (perspective over the tiers)
- Hypogeum if you have the Full Experience ticket
Exit from the Via Sacra side (towards the Roman Forum).
10:00–10:30 — Arch of Constantine
Just outside the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine (AD 315) marks the boundary between the amphitheatre and the Forum. No ticket required; allow 10–15 minutes. It is a masterpiece of syncretism: its sculptures were "borrowed" from the forums of Trajan and Marcus Aurelius.
10:30–12:30 — Roman Forum
Enter the Roman Forum from the Via Sacra entrance, opposite the Arch of Titus. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the highlights.
Recommended route through the Forum:
- Arch of Titus (AD 79) — reliefs of the destruction of Jerusalem
- Via Sacra — the main processional avenue
- Temple of Antoninus and Faustina — the best preserved, with the church of San Lorenzo
- Basilica Aemilia — marble floor stained by coins melted in AD 410
- Curia Iulia (Senate of Rome) — the original floor is still there
- Rostra — where senators and emperors addressed the people
- Temple of Saturn — the oldest surviving monument in the Forum (501 BC)
Exit the Forum towards the Palatine Hill ascent (follow signs "Palatino").
12:30–13:00 — Lunch Break
The most convenient lunch stop is outside the sites (do not re-enter immediately, or the ticket may need re-validation). Options:
- Cafés and trattorie along Via dei Fori Imperiali (200–300 metres away)
- Pack a lunch and eat in the green areas of the Colle Oppio hill (unofficial but tolerated picnic area)
13:00–15:30 — Palatine Hill
The Palatine is Rome's oldest hill, where legend places the city's founding in the 8th century BC. Allow 2–2.5 hours.
Recommended route on the Palatine:
- House of Augustus and House of Livia — first-century BC frescoes among the finest surviving from antiquity
- Palatine Museum (antiquarium) — sculptures and mosaics from the imperial palaces
- Domus Flavia and Domus Augustana — Domitian's palace complex
- Palatine Stadium — the emperors' private track
- Belvedere over the Circus Maximus — the finest viewpoint
15:30 — End of Visit and Return
Exit the Palatine from the Circus Maximus side (main exit towards the Circo Massimo metro station, Line B).
Return options:
- Metro Line B from Circo Massimo → Termini (3 stops)
- Taxi or NCC from Circus Maximus
Practical Tips for the Full Day
Water. Bring at least 1 litre per person. The nasoni (small Roman fountains) in the Forum and on the Palatine provide free drinking water.
Shade. The Roman Forum is almost entirely without shade. Hat and sunscreen are essential from April to October.
Footwear. Uneven ancient paving and gradients: trainers or light hiking shoes, never sandals.
Map. Download the offline site map (available via the CoopCulture app). The Forum is disorienting without it.
Audio guide. Recommended (€5–8 to hire). The free alternative is the official CoopCulture app.
What to Skip if You Are Short on Time
If you have fewer than 5 hours in total, from Colosseum + Forum + Palatine choose:
- Colosseum (90 min) — unmissable
- Roman Forum highlights only (60 min): Via Sacra, Arch of Titus, Curia, Rostra
- Palatine optional — if tired, skip it. The Forum is more visually striking
Getting There in Comfort
For such an intensive day, starting relaxed makes all the difference. Your private NCC driver picks you up from the hotel and takes you to the Colosseum without metro or stress. For the return, a quick message and the driver meets you at the Circus Maximus. Service from €49. → Book your driver at myromedriver.com
