Where it is

The Garbatella district sits in southern Rome, between Ostiense and the Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura, not far from the Tiber and EUR. It's a hilly, tucked-away district of lot houses ("case a lotto"), staircases, and small squares, with an easy metro link to the city centre.

By metro

The most convenient option is the metro:

  • Garbatella (Line B) — the stop shares the district's name and is the perfect starting point for exploring on foot.

Line B connects directly to the Colosseum, Termini, and EUR, putting Garbatella within easy reach.

By bus

The area is also served by several bus lines linking Garbatella with Ostiense, San Paolo, and the surrounding districts — handy for getting around the southern part of the city.

On foot in the district

Once you arrive, Garbatella is best experienced on foot: it was built to be wandered slowly, among lot houses, staircases, and courtyards. From the metro stop, the main squares and buildings are just minutes away.

By car and private driver (NCC)

The district is hilly, with narrow streets that are partly one-way: driving yourself isn't the best way to enjoy it. With a private driver (NCC) the visit is far easier: you're dropped at the edge of the district and picked up wherever you need, ideal for pairing Garbatella with Ostiense, the Centrale Montemartini, or San Paolo fuori le Mura — all close by.

Suggested itinerary

Garbatella pairs well with:

  • The Ostiense district and its street art.
  • The Centrale Montemartini.
  • The Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura.
  • The Pyramid of Cestius and Testaccio, just beyond.
