A district to experience step by step

The beauty of Garbatella isn't a single monument, but the whole: courtyards, staircases, archways, little piazzas and colourful houses you discover by strolling at your own pace. Here's what not to miss on your visit.

The lots and the "case a lotto"

The heart of the district are the lots ("lotti"), the units that make up Garbatella: each has its own personality, with inner courtyards, balcony walkways, little stairs and shared gardens. Walking among the lots means stepping into urban planning built on a human scale, made of common spaces and a real sense of community: a one-of-a-kind experience in Rome.

The Albergo Rosso and the "alberghi suburbani"

Among the most famous buildings are the "alberghi suburbani" (suburban hotels, early public housing blocks), large structures designed to take in those who had lost their homes. The best known is the Albergo Rosso (the Red Hotel), with its distinctive colour and its "barocchetto romano" (Roman Baroque revival) forms: one of Garbatella's architectural icons, overlooking one of the district's piazzas.

The piazzas and the hidden corners

Not to be missed:

  • Piazza Damiano Sauli, with its church and village atmosphere.
  • Piazza Benedetto Brin and the spaces around the alberghi suburbani.
  • The staircases and archways that connect the different levels of the district.
  • The photogenic corners among colourful houses, hanging laundry and little gardens.

Garbatella on screen

Garbatella is a much-loved film set: its streets appear in countless films and TV series (including the hit I Cesaroni, an Italian TV series). Spotting the corners you've seen on screen is part of the fun of a stroll through the district.
