Where it is

The Museo di Roma in Trastevere (Museum of Rome in Trastevere) sits on Piazza Sant'Egidio, in the heart of the Trastevere district, just steps from Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. It lies in a pedestrian-friendly, limited-traffic zone (ZTL) that's a joy to explore on foot, on the bank of the Tiber opposite the historic center.

By tram and bus

Your main reference point is tram 8, which links Piazza Venezia with Trastevere (Casaletto terminus) and stops close to the district. The area is also served by several bus lines along the riverside roads and Viale di Trastevere. From the tram or bus, the museum is a short walk away.

On foot

Trastevere is made for walking: the museum is minutes from Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, from Villa Farnesina, and from the Janiculum (Gianicolo). From the historic center, simply cross one of the bridges over the Tiber (Ponte Sisto is the handiest).

By metro

There's no metro stop in Trastevere: the closest stations are usually on Line B (Circo Massimo) or require a transfer. As is often the case in Rome, tram and bus are more practical than the metro in this part of the city.

By car and private driver (NCC)

Trastevere is largely ZTL, with narrow lanes ill-suited to cars: arriving in your own vehicle is not recommended. A private driver (NCC) makes the visit far easier: they drop you as close as possible and handle the ZTL and any waiting, perfect for pairing the museum with a stroll through the district, a visit to Villa Farnesina, or dinner in Trastevere, with an easy ride back even late in the evening.

Suggested itinerary

The museum pairs beautifully with:

  • Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere and the district.
  • Villa Farnesina and Palazzo Corsini, both nearby.
  • The Janiculum (Gianicolo) and its sweeping view over Rome.
  • Dinner or an aperitivo in the back lanes of Trastevere.
