The most authentic heart of Rome

Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is Rome's most-loved and most-photographed neighbourhood: a maze of cobbled lanes, ivy-draped houses, washing strung between windows, little piazzas with fountains and a life that pulses from morning until the small hours. Here the working-class Rome of old lives side by side with a bohemian soul of trattorias, artisan workshops and bars.

Far from the grandeur of the centre, Trastevere is best explored slowly, letting it surprise you at every turn. This is the place to understand why people don't just visit Rome -- they fall in love with it.

What makes Trastevere special

  • The piazzas: the heart is Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, home to Rome's oldest fountain and a basilica clad in golden mosaics.
  • The lanes: Vicolo del Cinque, Via della Scala, Piazza Trilussa -- made for getting happily lost.
  • The churches: masterpieces that are often blissfully uncrowded, from Santa Maria in Trastevere to Santa Cecilia.
  • The Janiculum: the hill rising above the neighbourhood, with the finest panoramic view over Rome.
  • The evenings: when Trastevere comes alive with lights, dinners and music.

The landmarks you can't miss

Trastevere safeguards artistic treasures that are too often overlooked:

  • The Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of the oldest in Rome, with magnificent mosaics. We've devoted a separate guide to it: Santa Maria in Trastevere.
  • The Basilica di Santa Cecilia, with Cavallini's frescoes and the famous statue of the saint.
  • The Tempietto del Bramante, a flawless Renaissance jewel beside San Pietro in Montorio.
  • Villa Farnesina and Palazzo Corsini, with Raffaello's frescoes and the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica.

The Janiculum, Rome's balcony

Rising above Trastevere is the Janiculum, the hill with the city's best-loved panoramic terrace: from here your gaze takes in the whole of Rome, from the domes to the rooftops. On the hill stand the monument to Garibaldi, the spectacular Fontana dell'Acqua Paola (the "Fontanone," or Big Fountain) and the famous cannon that fires a blank round every day at noon. It's the perfect finale to a stroll through the neighbourhood.

Trastevere by night

As the sun sets, Trastevere transforms: the lanes fill up, the trattorias light up their outdoor tables, music spills from the bars. It's one of the liveliest corners of Roman nightlife, yet also perfect for a romantic dinner. We cover it in our guide Trastevere by night.

How much time to give it

A walk taking in the main highlights needs just 2-3 hours; add the churches, the Janiculum and a dinner and Trastevere easily fills half a day or a whole evening.
