A walk through nature and archaeology
A visit to Villa Gregoriana is a journey through waterfalls, grottoes and ancient temples, along trails that drop into and climb back out of the Aniene gorge. This isn't a museum but a park to be walked, where every bend reveals a new view. Here's what not to miss.
The Great Waterfall
The highlight is the Aniene's Great Waterfall (Grande Cascata), roughly 120 m high: the largest waterfall in Tivoli, engineered in the 1800s by diverting the river. From the park's many viewpoints you can take in the full force of the cascade, the spray and the roar filling the gorge. It's a natural (and engineering) spectacle that's worth the trip on its own. We cover it in depth here: the Great Waterfall.

The grottoes
As you head down the trails, you reach the atmospheric grottoes carved into the rock by the water:
- Neptune's Grotto (Grotta di Nettuno), where the Aniene rushes through the rocks.
- The Grotto of the Sirens (Grotta delle Sirene), with its swirling water play.
These are dramatic, misty corners tucked into the greenery, showing the river's power to shape stone.
The Temple of the Sibyl and the acropolis
Climbing the far side of the gorge brings you to the ancient acropolis of Tivoli, with the remains of its Roman temples:
- The Temple of the Sibyl (Tempio della Sibilla), rectangular in plan.
- The famous Temple of Vesta (Tempio di Vesta), round, one of Tivoli's most photographed monuments, perched above the gorge.
This is the most striking viewpoint, where archaeology and landscape come together.
The trails and viewpoints
The whole park is a sequence of scenic trails, bridges, stairways and viewpoints over the waterfall and the gorge. The walk, deep in the vegetation, is part of the experience itself: a romantic route that enchanted Grand Tour travelers back in the 1800s.
