The Best Subjects

Apollo and Daphne (Room III)

The overhead light in the room creates dramatic shadows on the marble. The best spot is three-quarters from behind, with a 35–50 mm lens, low ISO, open aperture.

Canova's Venus Victrix (Room I)

Difficult to photograph well due to artificial lighting. Look for the left-side angle, which captures the relief of the bust against a dark background.

Rape of Proserpina (Room II)

Photograph the detail of the fingers sinking into flesh — this is the detail that surprises most in close-up photos. Use macro mode if available.

Bernini's David (Room IV)

The right profile with the sling — the expression on the face is the real subject.

Technical Tips

  • Stabilisation: necessary given the low light in some rooms. Keep your elbow pressed against your body.
  • ISO: in some rooms you may need 1600–3200 without flash. Accept digital noise rather than using flash.
  • Focus: white sculptural subjects against a light background are difficult for autofocus — use manual mode for details.
  • Composition: the rule of thirds works well for free-standing sculptures; for relief sculptures, look for the light that models the depth.

What Not to Photograph

  • Some works in the picture gallery have specific restrictions indicated by signs in the room.
  • Do not photograph other visitors without their consent.
  • Do not approach works for photographs: the minimum distance is indicated by lights on the floor.
