A terrace among orange trees, suspended over Rome

The Giardino degli Aranci (Orange Garden, officially Parco Savello) is one of Rome's most romantic spots: an intimate garden on the Aventine Hill, planted with orange trees and ending in a panoramic terrace looking out over the Tiber. From here your gaze sweeps across the rooftops of Trastevere, the domes of the historic centre and, on the horizon, the dome of St Peter's. It's the perfect place for a break, a stroll with someone you love, or simply to take in Rome from above, far from the crowds.

Admission is free and the garden is open every day: one of the city's simple, free pleasures.

The magic moment: sunset

The Giardino degli Aranci is at its best at sunset, when the sun drops behind St Peter's and bathes the whole city in pink and gold. It's one of the favourite spots for Romans and couples to watch the day fade. Arrive a little early to claim a place along the balustrade and enjoy the full spectacle: the atmosphere is priceless.

A little history

The garden stands on the site once occupied by the Savelli castle, beside the Basilica of Santa Sabina. In the twentieth century the area was transformed into the panoramic park we see today, designed precisely to give Romans a terrace overlooking the city. The orange trees, the palms and the central avenue create an orderly, Mediterranean atmosphere.

What to do and see

  • Take in the panorama from the terrace (St Peter's, Trastevere, the rooftops of Rome).
  • Stroll along the avenue of orange trees.
  • Visit the neighbouring Basilica of Santa Sabina (just a few steps away).
  • Carry on to the nearby Keyhole (buco della serratura) of the Knights of Malta.

Practical tips

  • Go at sunset: it's the most spectacular moment (arrive early).
  • Free admission: the garden is open every day (hours vary with the season).
  • Pair it with Santa Sabina and the Keyhole: they're just a few steps away.
  • Bring water: in summer the terrace is fully exposed to the sun.
