The hill of silence and sweeping views

The Aventine Hill is one of Rome's seven hills and, arguably, the most romantic and peaceful: an elegant residential district of villas, gardens, and ancient churches, poised above the Circus Maximus and the Tiber. Far from the tourist crowds, the Aventine offers some of the finest views over the city, a hushed atmosphere, and three iconic sights: the Giardino degli Aranci (Orange Garden), the famous Keyhole (buco della serratura), and the early Christian basilica of Santa Sabina.

It's the perfect destination for anyone after a more intimate, poetic side of Rome, and it shines at sunset.

Three sights you can't miss

  • The Giardino degli Aranci (Parco Savello): a panoramic terrace among orange trees, with views over Rome and the dome of St Peter's.
  • The Keyhole of the Knights of Malta: one of Rome's most famous secrets, framing St Peter's in perfect silhouette.
  • The Basilica of Santa Sabina: one of the best-preserved early Christian churches, with ancient carved wooden doors.

The Giardino degli Aranci

The Giardino degli Aranci (officially Parco Savello) is one of Rome's best-loved panoramic terraces: an intimate garden planted with orange trees, looking out over the Tiber and a panorama that stretches all the way to the dome of St Peter's. It's a perfect spot for a romantic stroll, especially at sunset. We give it a dedicated guide: the Giardino degli Aranci.

The Keyhole

A few steps away, in Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta, you'll find one of Rome's most curious and photographed spots: the Keyhole in the gate of the Villa del Priorato di Malta. Look through it and you'll see the dome of St Peter's perfectly framed by a hedge: a surprising, almost magical effect. We give it a dedicated guide: the Keyhole of the Aventine.

How much time you need

A stroll taking in the main highlights needs just 1–1.5 hours. It pairs perfectly with the nearby Circus Maximus or a visit to ancient Rome, and it's at its best in late afternoon, when the light turns golden and the crowds are elsewhere.
