The Basic Rule: Move Away from the Piazza
Piazza della Rotonda is one of Rome's most expensive piazzas for sitting down for a drink or a bite. Tables overlooking the Pantheon directly carry a premium that can be significant: a coffee at the bar in any Roman café costs around €1.10–1.50; sitting at the tables on the piazza, you often pay €4–7.
The practical rule is simple: the further you move from the piazza, the lower the prices. Two or three streets is usually enough to find places where Romans actually eat.
Coffee and Breakfast
Sant'Eustachio il Caffè (excellent)
Piazza Sant'Eustachio, 82 — approximately 4 minutes on foot from the Pantheon.
Considered by many to be Rome's best coffee. The recipe is a closely guarded secret, but the result is an espresso with a dense, lingering crema and an intense aroma. Served already sweetened (say amaro if you want it without sugar).
The bar is frequented by both knowledgeable tourists and neighbourhood Romans. Prices at the bar are slightly above the city average (around €2.50 for an espresso at the counter) but justified by the quality. There is almost always a short queue at the bar at peak hours, but it moves quickly.
La Tazza d'Oro (excellent)
Via degli Orfani, 84 — approximately 3 minutes on foot from the Pantheon.
Sant'Eustachio's main rival for the title of Rome's best coffee. Famous in particular for the caffè granita con panna in summer: a coffee granita with whipped cream that is one of Rome's quintessential experiences in the hot months. Ground coffee can also be purchased to take away.
Lunch and Snacks
La Ciambella (good value for money)
Via del Gesù, 76 — approximately 5–6 minutes on foot from the Pantheon.
A mid-to-upper-range restaurant occupying a building that incorporates remains of the Baths of Agrippa — the public baths originally linked to Agrippa's complex, of which the Pantheon was a part. The ancient masonry walls are visible in the décor. The cuisine is Roman with some creative elements. Average spend €20–30 per person without wine.
Pascucci (fresh juices and smoothies)
Via di Torre Argentina, 20 — approximately 6–8 minutes on foot.
A Roman institution for fresh fruit juices, centrifugati and smoothies. Ideal for a light snack or a refreshing break in the heat. Reasonable prices.
Supplì Roma (street food)
Via dei Giubbonari / various locations — nearest is about 10 minutes on foot.
The go-to chain for Roman supplì (fried rice balls with melting mozzarella). The ideal snack for those exploring the historic centre without wanting to sit down in a restaurant.
Dinner
For dinner, the general advice is to move further away from Piazza della Rotonda. The restaurants immediately around the monument are almost all in a "tourist" format — fixed menus, staff soliciting passers-by and inconsistent quality.
Recommended areas within walking distance of the Pantheon: the streets around Campo de' Fiori (10–12 minutes on foot) offer a more authentic selection at generally lower prices. The Via dei Coronari area (toward Piazza Navona, 5–8 minutes) has trattorias that maintain a local clientele.
Gelaterie
Giolitti (historic)
Via degli Uffici del Vicario, 40 — approximately 3 minutes on foot.
One of Rome's historic gelaterias, open since 1900. Wide selection of flavours, consistent quality, prices at the higher end of average (€3–4 for a cone). Very popular with tourists, which does not prevent it from maintaining appreciable quality.
Cremeria Monteforte (artisanal)
Via della Rotonda, 22 — less than one minute from the Pantheon.
An artisanal gelateria 50 metres from the Pantheon. Its location would make it a place to be suspicious of, but the quality is genuinely good. Particularly recommended for creamy flavours such as pistachio and hazelnut. Average prices.
Cheap Lunch: Where to Eat for Under €10
The historic centre around the Pantheon is not the best area for a cheap lunch, but options exist:
- Forno Campo de' Fiori (10 minutes away): a bakery with pizza al trancio, very popular with Romans and savvy tourists
- The bars on Via della Pace / Via del Governo Vecchio (toward Piazza Navona, 8–10 minutes): sandwiches and tramezzini at normal prices in non-tourist establishments
- Local bakeries: non-tourist panetterie in the side streets sell pizza bianca, pizza with mortadella and other baked goods for under €3
Wine and Aperitivo
The aperitivo — Italy's early-evening ritual — is an interesting option in the Pantheon area. Several wine bars and enoteche in nearby streets serve glasses of wine with a board of cheeses and cured meats or a selection of snacks.
Enoteca Corsi (Via del Gesù, 87/88) — one of the historic centre's oldest wine shops, with a small traditional Roman kitchen at contained prices. Much loved by Romans.
What to Avoid
Fixed menus displayed outside: any restaurant displaying a laminated menu outside with photographs of dishes and staff soliciting passers-by is almost certainly targeting tourists only. This is not a moral judgement, but an indicator of quality.
Bars directly on Piazza della Rotonda: table prices are inflated for the location. If the goal is simply to take a break with a view of the Pantheon, this is an acceptable choice provided expectations about price are clear.
Restaurants near the main attractions with no recent reviews: quality can vary greatly from season to season.
