The square at night

Piazza Navona in the evening is a different experience from the daytime. Crowds thin out after 10:00 pm, colours change, temperatures drop in summer making it much more pleasant, and artificial lighting completely transforms the visual character of the square.

The Fountain of the Four Rivers is illuminated every evening. Uplighting sculpts Bernini's figures with a plasticity that the flat midday light cannot offer.

Hours and atmosphere

Time slotAtmosphere
20:00–21:30Still very crowded, warm twilight light
21:30–23:00Gradual thinning of crowds, artificial lighting dominant
23:00–24:00Quieter, mainly residents and couples
After midnightPeaceful, few passers-by, excellent for photography

The square is safe until late at night. It is an open, well-lit space, busy until 1:00 or 2:00 am on weekends.

Safety

The square itself is safe. Pickpocketing is possible during the busiest hours — between 8:00 and 10:00 pm — not late at night. As in any heavily visited tourist area, keep bags and rucksacks in front of you and do not leave valuables unattended.

Evening bars and venues

There are numerous bars and lounge establishments around the square that open for aperitivo and stay open late. Sit-down prices are high (a cocktail can cost €10–15). Those who want a drink without overspending often buy from a wine bar and sit on the steps of the square or on the outer fountain edges.

Note: sitting on the inner rim of the fountains is prohibited and subject to a fine.

Bars and music

Some bars around the square offer live music or DJ sets on summer weekends. Volume levels are moderated by municipal noise regulations. No nightclub properly speaking faces directly onto Navona; the more intense nightlife is in nearby Trastevere or at Campo de' Fiori.

Evening stroll: suggested itinerary

  1. 7:30–8:00 pm: aperitivo on Via del Governo Vecchio or Piazza del Fico
  2. 8:00–9:00 pm: dinner in the area (trattoria 5–10 minutes from the square)
  3. 9:00–10:00 pm: stroll through the square, photographs of the Fountain of the Four Rivers under illumination
  4. 10:00 pm onwards: evening drink at one of the terrace bars, or continue to Campo de' Fiori or Trastevere

Piazza Navona at night in winter

In December and early January, the Christmas Market lights add a unique visual quality. The square is busy even on the coldest evenings. Dress warmly: January evenings can be sharp.
