A largely accessible basilica

St Peter's Basilica has made significant accessibility improvements over the years. The vast majority of the main visiting route is reachable by wheelchair or with limited mobility. Some areas — particularly the upper part of the dome and the Necropolis — remain inaccessible.

The dome: partial accessibility

SectionAccessibility
Rooftop terrace (lift level)Accessible — the lift (€8) reaches the rooftop terrace
From the roof to the top of the domeNot accessible — narrow curved stairway between the shells

For visitors with limited mobility, the rooftop terrace already offers a panoramic view of St Peter's Square and the Vatican Gardens, without the need to tackle the demanding final stretch.

Vatican Necropolis (Scavi)

The Necropolis tour is not accessible to wheelchair users due to the nature of the underground excavations (narrow passages, uneven terrain, changes in level).

Accessible toilets

Accessible toilets are available:

  • Outside the basilica, on the left side of the square
  • Near the dome ticket office

Audioguides

Audioguides (6 languages, approx. €5) are available inside the basilica and are well suited for use by visually impaired or blind visitors.

Visually impaired and blind visitors

  • Audioguides describe the main works of art and the history of each space
  • Tactile tours organised by some Roman associations for blind visitors offer the opportunity to touch scale models of the basilica and dome: check availability through specialist organisations

Deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors

  • There is no institutional sign language guide service (Italian Sign Language — LIS) run directly by the Vatican
  • Some external agencies offer tours in LIS: check before your visit through deaf organisations in Rome

Prams and pushchairs

  • Admitted in the main nave and in the external colonnade
  • Some side chapels have entrance steps that make pushchairs difficult to use

Parking for visitors with disabilities

Reserved parking for visitors with disabilities is available on Via della Conciliazione and near Piazza del Risorgimento, approximately 5–10 minutes' walk from the entrance.
