The Vatican area is not in the ZTL
Unlike the historic centre of Rome, the Prati neighbourhood and the area around St Peter's Square are not subject to the ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone). Cars can travel along the Lungotevere and Via della Conciliazione without special permits. That said, traffic can be heavy and parking is scarce.
By metro
The most convenient stop is Ottaviano on Line A, about 10 minutes' walk from the square. Take the main exit and follow signs for Piazza San Pietro, or walk west along Via Cola di Rienzo or Borgo Pio.
Lepanto (Line A) is at a similar distance and useful if you're arriving from the north.
| Departure | Line | Journey |
|---|---|---|
| Termini | A → Ottaviano | ~15 min |
| Spagna | A → Ottaviano | ~5 min |
| Barberini | A → Ottaviano | ~10 min |
By bus
Several ATAC bus lines stop close by:
| Line | Route | Stop |
|---|---|---|
| 40 | Termini / Largo Argentina | Via della Conciliazione |
| 62 | Piazza Bologna / centre | Via della Conciliazione |
| 23 | Ostiense / Trastevere | Lungotevere |

Lines 40 and 62 are the most used by tourists coming from the city centre and Termini station.
On foot: the most rewarding route
Walking to the Vatican is an experience in itself. The recommended route is:
- Ponte Sant'Angelo — cross the Tiber between Bernini's angel statues
- Borgo Sant'Angelo or Via dei Corridori — medieval lanes through the Borgo neighbourhood
- Via della Conciliazione — the grand boulevard opened by Mussolini in 1936, leading directly to the square
Walking time from Castel Sant'Angelo: ~10 minutes (500 m) From Piazza Navona: ~25 minutes (1.5 km) From the Pantheon: ~35 minutes (2.5 km)
By taxi or private driver
There are no ZTL restrictions in the Vatican area. A taxi or private driver can drop you on Via della Conciliazione or Largo del Colonnato, a short walk from the main entrance.
A private driver service is especially convenient for:
- Arrivals from the airport (Fiumicino or Ciampino)
- Families with children or visitors with reduced mobility
- Anyone who prefers not to deal with public transport during peak hours
From Fiumicino airport
| Option | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Private driver | ~45 min | Direct, no changes |
| Leonardo Express + metro A | ~55 min | Termini → Ottaviano |
| FCO bus + metro | ~70 min | More economical |
From Ciampino airport
| Option | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Private driver | ~35 min | Direct |
| Shuttle + metro A | ~55 min | Termini or Anagnina stop |
Useful notes

- Bicycles: permitted on the Lungotevere; not admitted into St Peter's Square at peak times
- Car parking: limited; the nearest parking is on Via della Conciliazione (paid) or in Prati garages
