The context: Borgo and Prati
Around the Vatican there are two areas with different characteristics:
- The Borgo (Borgo Pio, Borgo Vittorio): very close to the basilica, very touristy. Prices are high and quality is uneven. That said, a few genuine historic trattorias survive.
- Prati: the residential and commercial neighbourhood north of the Vatican, with Via Cola di Rienzo as its main axis. Here the choice is wider, prices are more reasonable, and the clientele is a mix of tourists and locals.
General rule: the further you walk from Via della Conciliazione, the better the value for money.
Not to be missed: the gelato
Gelateria dei Gracchi — Via Cola di Rienzo 272 One of the best artisan gelato shops in Rome, a few minutes' walk from the basilica. Seasonal ingredients, classic and creative flavours. Very popular with locals. Ideal for after the visit.
Borgo Pio: some addresses
| Place | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hostaria Dino e Tony | Traditional trattoria | Roman cooking, mid-range prices, frequented by locals |
| Il Sorpasso | Bar/bistrot | Excellent for aperitivo, charcuterie boards, breakfast |
| Pizzarium Bonci (Via della Meloria, slightly further) | Pizza al taglio | Gabriele Bonci's legendary slab pizza; often a queue, worth it |
Prati: recommended addresses
| Place | Type | Price range |
|---|---|---|
| Ristorante il Sorpasso | Modern Roman cuisine | €€ |
| Trattoria dal Toscano | Tuscan and Roman cooking | €€ |
| Caffè degli Archi | Breakfast, quick lunches | € |
| Via Candia / Via Fabio Massimo | Various local options | €–€€ |
What to avoid
- Restaurants with photos in the menu along Via della Conciliazione: often low quality, tourist prices
- Bars directly in front of the square: fine for a water stop, not recommended for eating
- Ordering mineral water without specifying: in Italy it is charged for; always specify if you want tap water (acqua del rubinetto — Rome's tap water is excellent)
For dinner after the visit
If your plan includes an evening visit to the square, restaurants in Prati and Borgo Pio are just a few minutes' walk away. Alternatively, Trastevere (about 20–25 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by taxi) offers a broader gastronomic choice with a lively evening atmosphere.
A quick lunch during the visit
For a short break without going too far:
- Bars under the arcades of Via della Conciliazione: coffee, pastries, sandwiches
- Prati supermarkets (e.g. Conad on Via Candia): good for water, fruit and snacks at normal prices
- Note that bringing food inside the basilica is not allowed, but you can eat outside, seated on the edge of the square

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there good restaurants near the Vatican or are they all tourist traps? There are excellent options, but they require a little distance from Via della Conciliazione. The Prati neighbourhood, 5–10 minutes on foot, has genuine food at reasonable prices.
How much does eating near the Vatican cost? A trattoria in Prati costs €15–25 per person for a full meal (first course + second course + drink). Places directly on the tourist route can charge twice as much for lower quality.
Is there a good place for gelato? Gelateria dei Gracchi on Via Cola di Rienzo is the straightforward answer: excellent quality, fair prices, a few minutes from the basilica.
