Castel Sant'Angelo (500 m)
The cylindrical fortress on the Tiber bank, originally the mausoleum of the Emperor Hadrian (2nd century AD), converted into a papal fortress in the Middle Ages. The covered elevated passageway known as the Passetto di Borgo connected the castle to the Vatican and was used by popes as an escape route. The interior is open to visitors (ticket ~€14). The panoramic terrace offers one of the best views of Rome.
Ponte Sant'Angelo
The Roman bridge with the famous angel statues sculpted by Bernini and his workshop. The natural pedestrian link between the Vatican and the historic centre.
Borgo Pio
The historic alley running parallel to Via della Conciliazione, with shops, trattorias and a more intimate feel than the grand papal avenue. Worth a stroll.
Prati
The bourgeois neighbourhood north of the Vatican. Via Cola di Rienzo is the main street for shopping, eating and services. An everyday atmosphere, reasonable prices.
