The lake sacred to Diana

In antiquity, Lake Nemi was one of the holiest places in Lazio: on its shores stood the famous Sanctuary of Diana Nemorensis, dedicated to the goddess of the hunt, the moon and the woods. The lake itself was known as the "Speculum Dianae" (Diana's Mirror). The grove surrounding the sanctuary was a place of worship that drew pilgrims from across the Roman world, and the archaeological remains along the shoreline still tell this thousand-year-old story today.

The cult of Diana Nemorensis

At Nemi, Diana was venerated as the protector of wild nature, of women and of childbirth. The sanctuary was vast and richly appointed, with temples, porticoes, a theater and quarters for the faithful. The countless votive offerings unearthed here speak to deep popular devotion. The cult of Nemi had an archaic, mysterious character, bound to the woods and the moon, that made it one of the most captivating sanctuaries in the Roman world.

The Rex Nemorensis and the Golden Bough

The sanctuary's most famous legend is that of the Rex Nemorensis, the "King of the Wood": a priest of Diana who held the office until a rival, after plucking a branch from a sacred tree (the Golden Bough), challenged and killed him to take his place. This dark and haunting tale inspired the anthropologist James Frazer in his celebrated work The Golden Bough, one of the most influential texts in the study of myth and religion.

What remains today

The shores of the lake preserve the archaeological remains of the sanctuary: foundations, masonry, chambers and terraces that hint at the scale of the complex. Many finds and statues from the site are now held in museums (in Nemi, in Rome and abroad). Set in the greenery of the crater, the visit blends archaeology, nature and the spell of myth.

How to visit

The sanctuary grounds lie on the shores of Lake Nemi, near the Museum of the Roman Ships. Opening hours and access conditions can change (check on site or on the official website). It pairs perfectly with a visit to the village and the museum, for a full day at Nemi.
