General situation

The Trevi Fountain is outdoors and accessible without a ticket, 24 hours a day. There is no museum building to pass through. The physical access to the piazza, however, has some difficulties linked to the historic urban environment.

Paving: the main challenge

The piazza and surrounding streets are paved with sampietrini — the characteristic Roman basalt cobblestones. This paving:

  • Is uneven and unstable for wheelchairs and pushchairs
  • Can be slippery when it rains or when the fountain splashes water
  • Has no smooth alternative surface in the main piazza

For wheelchair users: the sampietrini are negotiable but require effort. The wheels of a standard wheelchair or pushchair tend to get caught in the gaps between the cobblestones.

From Via del Tritone

Via del Tritone has a more regular road surface than the narrow streets nearby. From here you reach the piazza through Vicolo Scavolino, which is partly asphalted.

From Via della Muratte

Lateral access. Mixed surface between basalt and asphalt, moderately manageable.

From Via dei Lucchesi

Most direct route from Barberini metro station (line A). Includes some cobbled stretches.

Distance from Barberini metro: approximately 700 metres. The route includes pedestrian crossings with traffic lights but also some uphill stretches.

Ramps and steps

The fountain piazza is essentially flat. There are no steps to access the main area. However:

  • Some approach streets have steps or level changes
  • No dedicated ramps in the older streets
  • The route profile from Barberini has gentle gradients

Accessible toilets

There are no public toilets directly in the Trevi Fountain piazza. The nearest accessible toilets are at:

  • McDonald's on Via della Muratte: accessible toilets, free for customers
  • Shopping centres and shops in the Via del Tritone area: some have public facilities

Practical tip: plan toilet stops before arriving in the fountain area.

Visiting with pushchairs

Considerations for pushchairs are similar to those for wheelchairs:

  • The sampietrini make pushing a pushchair tiring
  • Pushchairs with large wheels (such as jogging strollers) perform better than lightweight urban pushchairs
  • The piazza is small: during peak hours the crowd compresses available space and manoeuvring becomes difficult

Recommended time: early morning (before 8:00) — fewer people and greater freedom of movement.

Access for visually impaired visitors

The Trevi Fountain is primarily a visual experience. However:

  • The sound of the water is audible throughout the piazza and already in the approach streets
  • There are no Braille panels or dedicated audio guides in the piazza
  • Some specialist private guides offer descriptive tours with accompaniment for accessible visits

Accessible transport to the fountain

The Trevi Fountain is in a ZTL zone. Taxis and private transport services cannot approach the piazza completely but can drop passengers off on nearby streets (Via del Tritone, Via della Muratte) a short walk away.

For people with significantly limited mobility, a private driver can optimise the logistics: closest permitted approach, waiting nearby, pickup at the end of the visit.

Visit the Trevi Fountain with a private driver: access from the closest permitted position and logistical support for visitors with limited mobility. Service from €49. → Book your driver at myromedriver.com

2024 paid access system

Since 2024 there has been a trial with €2 access during certain hours. Entry points are located on the sides of the balustrade. Access for people with disabilities is free upon presentation of suitable documentation. Check updated conditions on the Rome Municipality website at the time of your visit.
