Monument Layout: How to Orient Yourself

The Vittoriano extends over several levels:

Ground floor (free access): The crypt of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame. This is the most symbolically significant level: the hourly changing of the guard takes place here.

Intermediate level (free access): The Central Museum of the Risorgimento, with manuscripts, uniforms, weapons and diplomatic documents related to the Unification of Italy.

Main terrace (free access): The monumental staircase and the equestrian statue of Victor Emanuel II. Frontal view over Piazza Venezia.

Terrace of Quadrigas (~€7): The highest level, reachable by panoramic lift on the left side of the monument (facing the façade). The 360° panorama is considered by many to be the finest in Rome.

The Changing of the Guard

The changing of the guard at the Flame of the Unknown Soldier takes place every hour, all year round. The ceremony lasts about 10 minutes and is one of Rome's most solemn spectacles. No booking is required: simply turn up and wait.

Practical Tips

  • Best time for the terrace: early morning or late afternoon for softer light and smaller crowds
  • Avoid 4 November and 2 June: during national ceremonies some areas may be closed to the public
  • Bring water: there are no cafés or refreshment points inside the monument
  • Dress code: no particular dress requirements
  • Recommended time: 45 minutes for the basic visit; 1.5 hours including museum and terrace
