A district to explore with an architect's eye
EUR reveals itself as you stroll along its wide boulevards and monumental buildings, in an orderly, almost "metaphysical" atmosphere. Here are the stops you shouldn't miss.
The Square Colosseum
The symbol of EUR is the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana (Palace of Italian Civilization), the "Colosseo Quadrato" (Square Colosseum): a cube of white travertine with six rows of arches per side, lit up at night and stunning in every season. Today it's home to Fendi, and it's the most photographed building in the district. We've given it a guide of its own: the Square Colosseum.
The lake and the park
The green heart of EUR is the artificial lake, ringed by a park with trees, walking paths and a waterfall. It's a relaxing spot, loved by Romans for jogging and downtime, with lovely views of the monumental buildings reflected in the water. In spring, the cherry trees in bloom along the banks are a sight to behold.

The Basilica dei Santi Pietro e Paolo
On EUR's highest hill stands the Basilica dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, its great dome visible from afar. The wide staircase offers a fine view over the district. It's an example of 20th-century sacred architecture, understated yet monumental.
The Palazzo dei Congressi and the Marconi Obelisk
Among the other landmark buildings:
- The Palazzo dei Congressi, with its sweeping arched façade and Rationalist interiors.
- The Marconi Obelisk, at the center of a square, dedicated to the inventor of the radio.
- The twin palaces and the long boulevards that give the district its structure.
Fuksas's Nuvola
Alongside its historic architecture, EUR is also home to a contemporary masterpiece: the "Nuvola" (the Cloud) by Massimiliano Fuksas, a convention center with a huge suspended "cloud" of steel and glass enclosed in a glass case. It's proof that the district remains a living laboratory of architecture.
