A palace to discover room by room
The Galleria Doria Pamphilj is a sequence of opulent rooms where masterpieces hang in the old quadreria style (a picture-gallery hang), packed tightly side by side. Here's what you can't miss on your visit.
Velázquez's Portrait of Innocent X
This is the heart of the collection: the Portrait of Pope Innocent X, painted by Velázquez in 1650. The intense, almost unsettling gaze and the mastery of reds make it one of the greatest portraits of all time. Kept in a small dedicated cabinet, it stands beside a bust of the same pope sculpted by Bernini. We've given it its own guide: the Portrait of Innocent X.
The Caravaggios
The gallery holds two works by the young Caravaggio:
- Rest on the Flight into Egypt — a tender, luminous scene featuring the celebrated music-making angel seen from behind.
- Penitent Magdalene — an intimate, silent portrait and one of the artist's most delicate images.

The Hall of Mirrors
One of the most spectacular spaces is the Hall of Mirrors, inspired by the one at Versailles: a long, light-filled room decorated with mirrors, gilded stucco and ceiling frescoes. It's the perfect way to grasp the splendor of Roman aristocratic life.
The masters of the picture gallery
As you move through the rooms, you'll find an extraordinary range of masterpieces:
- Raffaello — the celebrated Double Portrait.
- Tiziano and Tintoretto — the great Venetian school.
- Pieter Bruegel the Elder and the Flemish masters.
- Landscapes by Claude Lorrain and numerous ancient sculptures.
The dense arrangement, from floor to ceiling, is itself part of the experience.
How to plan your visit
If you're short on time, follow this order:
- Portrait of Innocent X by Velázquez (and the Bernini bust)
- The Caravaggios
- The Hall of Mirrors
- The masterpieces of the picture gallery (Raffaello, Tiziano, Bruegel)
With the audio guide narrated by the family, plan on about 1.5 hours.
