A hill of panorama and history

The Janiculum (Gianicolo) is far more than a terrace with a view: along its tree-lined avenues you'll find monuments, fountains and memories of Italy's Risorgimento (the 19th-century unification movement). Here's what you shouldn't miss.

The panoramic terrace (Piazzale Garibaldi)

The heart of the Janiculum is Piazzale Giuseppe Garibaldi, the great terrace overlooking Rome. From here the view sweeps across the entire historic center: the Vittoriano, the domes, the bell towers and the rooftops, all the way to the hills on the horizon. It's one of the city's most beloved spots for photos and for watching the sunset. At its center rises the equestrian monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi, hero of the Risorgimento, commemorating the 1849 battle to defend the Roman Republic, fought on this very hill.

The noon cannon

Below the terrace, every day at noon (12:00), the famous cannon fires a blank round: a tradition dating to 1904 that still draws crowds of curious onlookers. We've given it a guide of its own: the Janiculum cannon.

The Fontanone dell'Acqua Paola

A short walk away stands the monumental Fontana dell'Acqua Paola (Acqua Paola Fountain), the "Fontanone" (the "big fountain"): a grand, theatrical façade with water pouring from it and yet another stunning view over Rome. It's also a cinema icon, opening Paolo Sorrentino's film La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty). We've given it a guide of its own: the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola.

The lighthouse and the busts of the patriots

Along the Janiculum promenade you'll find:

  • The Janiculum Lighthouse (Lighthouse of the Italians of Argentina), a gift from the Italian community in Argentina, lit at night in the colors of the flag.
  • The busts of Garibaldi's volunteers and the patriots of the Risorgimento, lining the avenues.
  • The monument to Anita Garibaldi, the hero's wife, on horseback.
  • The Tempietto del Bramante (at San Pietro in Montorio), a Renaissance masterpiece, just below.
