A villa frescoed top to bottom

At Villa Farnesina, every room is a masterpiece. In just over an hour you'll walk past some of the most beautiful frescoes of the Roman Renaissance. Here's what not to miss.

The Loggia of Cupid and Psyche

The moment you step inside, you meet the Loggia of Cupid and Psyche, decorated by Raffaello and his workshop. The vault is painted as a faux arbor of flowers and fruit, through which the gods of Olympus lean out to watch the love story of Cupid and Psyche unfold. An explosion of color and harmony, among the most joyful scenes of the Renaissance.

The Loggia of Galatea and the Triumph of Galatea

Next door opens the Loggia of Galatea, home to Raffaello's celebrated Triumph of Galatea: the nymph gliding over the waves on a chariot drawn by dolphins, a flawless image of grace and motion. The same room holds Sebastiano del Piombo's Polyphemus and the lunettes with their mythological scenes. We've devoted a separate guide to the Triumph of Galatea: the Triumph of Galatea.

The Hall of Perspectives

On the upper floor, Baldassarre Peruzzi's Hall of Perspectives is a masterpiece of illusion: the walls seem to open onto faux columns and loggias, beyond which views of Rome come into focus. It's one of the oldest and most captivating examples of perspective painting, a true trick for the eye.

The Hall of the Wedding of Alexander and Roxana

Agostino Chigi's former bedroom is decorated by Il Sodoma (Giovan Antonio Bazzi) with the Wedding of Alexander and Roxana: an elegant, sensual scene depicting the marriage of the great commander. It's one of the most intimate and refined spaces in the villa.
