On Via della Lungara, in Trastevere and facing the Villa Farnesina, sits one of Rome's most captivating and least crowded art galleries: the Galleria Corsini, home (alongside Palazzo Barberini) of the National Gallery of Ancient Art. Housed in the sumptuous Palazzo Corsini, it holds a precious collection of paintings spanning the 15th to the 18th century, still arranged in the manner of an 18th-century picture gallery (quadreria) hung in tiers. It is the perfect place to admire masterpieces — including a Caravaggio — in an intimate, aristocratic setting.

Palazzo Corsini and its history

The palace was enlarged in the 18th century for the Corsini family, tied to Pope Clement XII, to a design by Ferdinando Fuga. Before then it had been home to the famous Queen Christina of Sweden, one of the most fascinating figures of 17th-century Europe, who held court here and died here. The gallery still preserves its historic "quadreria" display, with the paintings hung in tiers across the walls: a plunge into the aristocratic collecting of another age.
