The sacred colossus of ancient Praeneste
The Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia in Palestrina is one of the most extraordinary architectural complexes of the Roman world: a colossal system of stacked terraces that climbed the hillside for more than a hundred meters of elevation, all the way up to the goddess's temple at the summit. Built between the 2nd and 1st century BC, it was so vast that the modern town of Palestrina is largely built on its structures. It is regarded as the masterpiece of late Republican sacred architecture and one of the most famous sanctuaries of the ancient world.
The goddess Fortuna and the oracle
The sanctuary was dedicated to Fortuna Primigenia, an ancient goddess of fate, fertility and destiny. Praeneste was famous throughout Italy for its oracle: the faithful questioned destiny through the "sortes praenestinae" (the Praenestine lots), inscribed tablets drawn at random by a child. This cult drew pilgrims from far and wide, making it one of the most important religious centers in ancient Lazio.

The terraced architecture
The genius of the sanctuary lies in its staging: a succession of terraces, symmetrical ramps, porticoes and exedrae rising upward, guiding the gaze and the footsteps of pilgrims to the sanctuary at the top. Among its most celebrated features:
- The great cordonata ramps that climbed in crisscrossing flights.
- The colonnaded porticoes and the exedrae.
- The upper terrace with the round temple of Fortuna.
- The seamless integration of architecture and natural slope.
It is an unmatched example of how the Romans could bend the landscape to monumental scale.
What remains today
The sanctuary's structures are now absorbed into the town: as you stroll through Palestrina you walk over the ancient terraces, among the remains of ramps, walls and chambers. At the summit, Palazzo Colonna Barberini (home to the museum) occupies the area of the upper temple, and from this vantage point you grasp the sheer scale of the whole.
