A town built on a Roman sanctuary

About 35 km southeast of Rome, perched on the Prenestini mountains, Palestrina is one of the most surprising day trips in Lazio. Ancient Praeneste holds one of the largest and most spectacular sacred complexes of the Roman world: the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia, a monumental system of terraces that climbed the hillside. The modern town is literally built on top of and inside the sanctuary's structures, and at the summit the National Archaeological Museum guards an absolute masterpiece: the Nile Mosaic. A perfect destination for anyone who loves archaeology away from the crowds.

Praeneste and Fortuna Primigenia

In antiquity Praeneste was famous throughout Italy for its oracle and for the cult of Fortuna Primigenia, goddess of fate and fertility. Built between the 2nd and 1st century BC, the sanctuary was an extraordinary feat of engineering: ramps, terraces, porticoes and exedrae rose up the slope to the temple at the top, in a dramatic setting that left pilgrims in awe. It is considered one of the supreme examples of Roman sacred architecture.
