The neighbourhood: Rione Trevi
The fountain stands in the Rione Trevi, one of Rome's 22 historic rioni. The neighbourhood's name likely derives from trivium (three roads), the same origin as the fountain's name. It is a district of narrow streets and Baroque palazzi, traditionally residential and commercial.
The fountain's own piazza is small — nothing like Rome's grand open squares — but the surrounding neighbourhood has its own distinct character.
Within 5 minutes on foot
Piazza Barberini and the Fountain of Triton
5–7 minutes north-west. The Fontana del Tritone (1642–1643) is by Gian Lorenzo Bernini: a triton blowing into a conch shell at the centre of the piazza. Opposite stands the Fontana delle Api (1644), also by Bernini, bearing the bee emblem of the Barberini family.
Piazza Barberini is also the closest metro station to the Trevi Fountain (Line A).
Via Veneto
10 minutes from Piazza Barberini: the celebrated Via Veneto, the artery of Rome's upper-class life in the 1960s, immortalised by Fellini in La Dolce Vita. Historic cafés, luxury hotels, noble palazzi. Today largely touristy, but still elegant.
Vicolo delle Muratte
The street connecting the Trevi Fountain to Via del Corso (east–west). Animated by shops and gelaterias, it is the natural route for tourists.
Within 10–15 minutes on foot
The Pantheon
Westward, 15 minutes via Via della Stamperia → Piazza di Pietra → Piazza della Rotonda. The Column of Antonine Pius (Hadrian's Temple) at Piazza di Pietra is visible en route. The Pantheon is the best-preserved ancient Roman monument.
Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps
Northward, 15–18 minutes. The Spanish Steps (1726, architect Francesco de Sanctis) are one of Rome's most recognisable landmarks. At the top, the church of Trinità dei Monti and the Sallustian Obelisk. At the bottom, the Fontana della Barcaccia (1627–1629) by Pietro Bernini.
The Quirinal
Eastward, 10 minutes. The Palazzo del Quirinale, official residence of the President of the Italian Republic, is open to visitors on certain days. The piazza offers a panorama over the city. Nearby stands the Palazzo delle Esposizioni on Via Nazionale.
Within 15–20 minutes on foot
Piazza Navona
The great Baroque piazza with Bernini's Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (1651). Route: Trevi Fountain → Via delle Muratte → Via del Corso → Piazza di Sant'Ignazio → Via del Seminario → Pantheon → Corso del Rinascimento.
Largo di Torre Argentina
This site contains four Republican-era temples (4th–1st century BC), the site where Julius Caesar was assassinated on 15 March 44 BC, and a cat sanctuary managed by volunteers. About 18–20 minutes from the Trevi Fountain.
Churches in the neighbourhood
Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio
Directly opposite the Trevi Fountain. Baroque façade (Martino Longhi the Younger, 1650). Inside, urns containing the viscera of numerous popes (17th–19th centuries) — a remarkable historical curiosity.
Sant'Andrea delle Fratte
Towards Via Condotti, 10 minutes. Bernini designed the bell tower. Baroque frescoes and columns.
Santa Maria della Vittoria
Towards Piazza della Repubblica, 15 minutes. Home to Bernini's Ecstasy of Saint Teresa (1647–1652), one of the most celebrated Baroque sculptures in the world.
