Rome's great green lung
On the Monteverde slope, right beside the Janiculum and Trastevere, stretches Rome's largest park: Villa Doria Pamphilj, nearly 200 hectares of meadows, pine groves, gardens, lakes and tree-lined avenues. It's the city's "green lung," beloved by Romans for jogging, picnics, walks and days outdoors with the family. Created as a noble estate in the 1600s, today it's a free public park where nature, history and art live side by side: the perfect spot for a restorative break far from the traffic.
A noble villa turned public park
Villa Pamphilj was created in the 17th century for the Pamphilj family (tied to Pope Innocent X) as a grand estate for ceremony and leisure. Over the centuries it gained Italian formal gardens, fountains, buildings and works of art, including the exquisite Casino del Bel Respiro (the Bel Respiro casino-villa, also known as Casino Algardi). Brought into public ownership in the 20th century, it's now a park open to everyone, where aristocratic splendor blends with the city's everyday life.
