A neighborhood to explore looking up

You discover Quartiere Coppedè (the Coppedè district) on foot, eyes lifted: every building hides details, symbols and references. Here's what not to miss.

The entrance arch

The dramatic way in is the monumental arch that, from Via Tagliamento, links the two Palazzi degli Ambasciatori and opens onto Piazza Mincio. A huge wrought-iron chandelier hangs beneath it, surrounded by a crowd of carvings, mascarons and figures. It's the "gateway" to Coppedè's fairytale world: look up before you walk through.

Piazza Mincio and the Fontana delle Rane

The heart of the district is Piazza Mincio, with the famous Fontana delle Rane (Fountain of the Frogs) at its center: a fountain ringed with bronze frogs spouting water. It comes with a fun bit of lore (the story goes that the Beatles took a dip here after a concert). We've given it its own guide: the Fontana delle Rane.

The Villino delle Fate

Facing Piazza Mincio, the Villino delle Fate (Cottage of the Fairies) is the most fantastical building in the district: a riot of layered styles — medieval arches, mullioned windows, mosaics, frescoes, mixed materials (marble, brick, travertine) — that conjures up a storybook castle. Every façade is different and packed with nods to the history of Florence, Venice and Rome. It's the most photographed building in Coppedè.

The Palazzo del Ragno

Another landmark is the Palazzo del Ragno (Palace of the Spider), named for the large mosaic spider that crowns its entrance, a symbol of industriousness. Its massive forms and medieval-style ornament add to the district's suspended, faintly mysterious mood.

The details to hunt for

As you walk, look for:

  • The chandelier beneath the entrance arch.
  • The mascarons, deities and animals on the façades.
  • The bees, spiders and other symbols of hard work.
  • The mix of styles (Gothic, Art Nouveau, classical) on a single building.

How to plan your visit

  2. Piazza Mincio and the Fontana delle Rane
