Where Trastevere Is
Trastevere sits on the west bank of the Tiber, south of the Vatican and facing the historic center and Tiber Island. It's a compact neighbourhood of narrow lanes that you explore entirely on foot — the key is knowing how to reach its edge.
By Tram
The easiest and most iconic option is the tram:
- Tram 8 — links Piazza Venezia with Trastevere (Casaletto terminus), cutting through the neighbourhood along Viale di Trastevere. It's the most direct route from the center.
The stops along Viale di Trastevere drop you a few steps from the lanes and the main squares.
By Bus
Several bus lines serve Trastevere and the Lungotevere. The neighbourhood is also well connected on foot to nearby areas.
On Foot from the Center
Trastevere is an easy, pleasant walk away:
- Historic center (Campo de' Fiori) — about 12–15 minutes via Ponte Sisto.
- Tiber Island / Jewish Ghetto — about 10 minutes.
- Vatican — about 20–25 minutes along the Tiber.
Crossing one of the Tiber bridges, such as Ponte Sisto, is the most atmospheric way to enter the neighbourhood.

By Car and the ZTL
Trastevere falls inside a ZTL and is laced with very narrow lanes, many of them pedestrian: parking is practically impossible and driving through the neighbourhood is best avoided. In the evening, the night ZTL restricts access even further. With a private driver (NCC) that problem disappears: you're dropped at the edge of the neighbourhood and picked up whenever you like, even late at night after dinner — the ideal way to enjoy Trastevere without a care.
Suggested Itinerary
Trastevere pairs perfectly with:
- The Janiculum (for the panoramic view and the sunset).
- Tiber Island and the Jewish Ghetto, across the river.
- Villa Farnesina and Palazzo Corsini, within the neighbourhood itself.
A private driver keeps the whole itinerary flowing, especially when it ends with dinner.
